Colin Spiers

Since graduating from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Colin Spiers’ career has been marked by diversity, involving teaching commitments as a staff member of the University of Queensland, as an ABC accompanist, and as a freelance composer. After leaving his position as foundation pianist with the new music ensemble Perihelion in 1990, he joined the staff of Newcastle Conservatorium, where he is currently Senior Lecturer in Composition.

In 1993 Spiers gained an honourable mention in the Ernest Bloch International Composition Competition, and two years later won the prestigious Jean Bogan Prize for Piano Composition with his Piano Sonata No. 2. His works have appeared on the ABC Classics and Jade labels, with several pieces receiving premieres in 2002 and 2003.
