Richard Meale

Undoubtedly one of the most significant composers Australia has produced over the past decades, Richard Meale has been recognized and awarded internationally for his compositions. While he studied piano, clarinet, harp, history and theory at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, Richard was self-taught in composition, receiving a Ford Foundation Grant in 1960, which took him to the University of California to study non-Western music. Further on the international front, Richard’s works have been performed at festivals such as ISCM World Music Days, Warsaw Autumn Festival and the Paris Rostrum as well as frequently broadcast on European radio. Commissions have included ‘String Quartet No 3’ which was commissioned by Kenneth Tribe to commemorate Musica Viva’s 50th birthday and ‘Palimpsest’, commissioned by the Griffith Ensemble and premiered by the Light Ensemble at the Barossa Music Festival in 1999.

Richard Meale’s work is well established and highly regarded both here and overseas with a key catalogue of works that includes the operas ‘Voss’ and ‘Mer de Glace’.

Other prestigious compositions which will now be available through Allans/ABC Music Publishing include such important works as; ‘Nocturnes’, ‘Very High Kings’, ‘String Quartet No 3’, ‘Sonata For Flute’, ‘Melisande’, ‘Lumen’, ‘Palimpsest’ and ‘Three Miro Pieces’.
